    #71 apel76 @ jati34 When You Look at Me

    apel76 @ jati34 You'll see someone

    Notes

apel76 @ jati34 When You Look at Me

It’s so easy to look without seeing. So much surrounds us, information bombards us. Sometimes it can feel like sensory overload. It’s natural – and important – to ignore some things. It’s part our constant, semi-conscious work of interpreting what’s important, what merits our attention.

Sometimes this good instinct can make us miss important details, though. It takes conscious effort to see the realities that shimmer just below the surface, or make their homes in the periphery of our vision.

In “When you look at me,” Darrel W. Maness reminds us that each person has numerous stories inside of them. In the words of Walt Whitman, we all “contain multitudes,” and part of the work of growing into ourselves is getting better at recognizing that fact. If we look, if we listen, we can see them, hear them, be present to them.
